A two-vehicle crash on Falls Street at Sampson Street in the city Thursday claimed the life of a New Castle man.
The Lawrence County coroner determined an accident on Falls Street at Sampson Street on Thursday was the direct cause of death of a pickup truck driver.
An autopsy performed following the two-vehicle collision revealed 60-year-old Randall J. Shropshire of the Croton area died of multiple blunt force injuries to his head neck and chest. Shropshire was pronounced dead at the scene by Lawrence County Coroner Richard “R.J.” Johnson.
Shropshire was driving a red pickup truck west on Falls Street in the city around noon when a southbound white sedan driven by Laresha Perkins, 23, of the city’s East Side, pulled from the intersection of Sampson Street into his path and struck his truck nearly head-on, according to a report from city police Cpl. Chris Fabian.
The truck ended up on a steep embankment outside of Westview Terrace. Perkins’ car sustained severe front-end damage. She was taken by ambulance to a hospital with unknown injuries, Fabian said.
The truck also had severe damage and both vehicles were towed.
The New Castle Fire Department assisted the city police at the scene, and police rerouted traffic around that area.
Fabian said Shropshire was not wearing a seat belt, and that Perkins was wearing hers. The police are still investigating the accident, reviewing surveillance video of the area and determining whether charges will be filed against Perkins, he said.
He said he did not believe speed was a factor in the accident.
