BEAUFORT, S.C. (WSAV) – The City of Beaufort has issued a reminder regarding Commercial truck drivers and other operators driving large vehicles over Woods Memorial Bridge.
Drivers are reminded that it is against the law to cross the bridge “if your vehicle has three or more axles and weighs 40,000 pounds or more.”
The bridge is one of several in Beaufort where through truck traffic is prohibited. Instead, the city urges drivers to use designated through truck routes, designated by signage reading “Truck Route.”
Routes where commercial through truck traffic is not allowed in the City of Beaufort include travel to and from US 21 Business/Boundary Street, SC 281/Ribaut Road, and US 21/Lady’s Island Drive. These designated routes are marked by signs saying “Truck Notice/No Thru Trucks.”
Failure to abide by these regulations constitutes a violation of the South Carolina Code of Laws, Title 56 – Motor Vehicles, Chapter 5 – Uniform Act Regulating Traffic on Highways, which mandates obedience to traffic-control devices – and will result in fines of up to $237.50.
