Charges against a group of thieves have been unsealed after men steal truckload of dimes in Philly earlier this year.
The theft occurred back in April of this year in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania after a crime spree committed by a group of four men.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, 25-year-old Rakiem Savage, 31-year-old Ronald Byrd, 30-year-old Haneef Palmer, and 32-year-old Malik Palmer stole $234, 500 worth of dimes out of a truck parked in a Walmart parking lot after the driver parked the truck and went home because he ran out of hours. The entire load was worth $750,000 and was being transported from the US Mint in Philadelphia to Miami.
The thieves left thousands of dimes scattered outside of the truck after breaking into the trailer. Investigators believe the heist was one of several committed by the group, which included the theft of frozen crab legs, shrimp, meat, beer, and liquor from semi trucks throughout the region. Some of these incidents involved dragging the truck driver out of the rig by force before cutting the trailer open and taking the cargo inside.
After the dime robbery, the men were able to successfully convert thousands of dollars of dimes into cash using Coinstar machines in Maryland, or depositing them at different banks in Philadelphia. However, investigators say that a large amount of the money is still unaccounted for.
“If for some reason you have a lot of dimes at home,” said Philadelphia police spokesperson Miguel Torres, “this is probably not the time to cash them in.”
All four men are facing charges of conspiracy, robbery and theft of government money.
