Police in an Indiana town with a population of about 25,000 reportedly recovered nearly $3 million of stolen cargo from a tractor-trailer.
According to a Facebook post from the Greenfield (Indiana) Police Department, officers were informed that a tractor-trailer traveling on Interstate 70 was suspected of being involved in a Pennsylvania cargo theft incident that occurred on June 25.
Officers said they located the tractor-trailer near the Greenfield exit and conducted a traffic stop on Saturday, June 27.
Following the traffic stop, officers arrested Deepak Kumar, 31, of Fresno, Calif., for theft by unlawful taking (movable property) and criminal use of a communication facility. Kumar was arrested on an active warrant from the Pennsylvania State Police, a spokesperson for the Greenfield Police Department told Land Line.
Police said that Kumar is suspected of using fraudulent documents to obtain a load of nearly 40,000 pounds of tungsten oxide powder that was being shipped to Mitsubishi Materials Corporation in Japan. The stolen cargo reportedly was valued at $2.85 million.
“The truck and trailer were impounded by Inman’s Towing of Greenfield and held as evidence pending a search warrant request,” the Greenfield Police Department wrote in a news release. “A search warrant for the truck and trailer was later issued, and officers confirmed the stolen cargo was present in the trailer. A representative of Mitsubishi Materials Corporation arrived in Greenfield on Sunday (June 28) and took possession of the stolen cargo.”
On the streets of Philadelphia
Instances of cargo theft aren’t new around the nation and especially not in Pennsylvania.
Earlier in June, A21 Wine and Spirits announced that roughly 1,800 cases of Noble Oak Bourbon had been stolen from a Philadelphia warehouse. Officials from the company said the crime was carried out “in broad daylight” and that they believe it to be part of a “coordinated cargo theft operation.”
Last year, cargo thieves in Philadelphia stole more than $20,000 worth of meat while a truck driver slept. LL
