OAKLAND — A BART train operator was hospitalized, a passenger injured and 45 passengers evacuated after a pickup truck driver suspected of driving under the influence crashed into a train late Monday, authorities said.
Police arrested a 67-year-old Oakland man who they said also was hospitalized.
Information on the BART operator’s injuries, as well as the truck driver’s were not available early Tuesday.
The collision between the train and truck happened around 11:35 p.m. and shut down service between the Coliseum and Lake Merritt stations, according to BART spokesperson Jim Allison.
The damage from the crash was repaired overnight, and trains were running through the stations normally early Tuesday, Allison said.
The truck driver remained at the scene. Police gave him a field-sobriety test and took him into custody.
Authorities said the truck driver was going east on E. 8th Street near Park Boulevard Way when the crash happened. Police said the driver lost control and went over a curb and over a retaining wall, before crashing through a fence and onto the tracks.
A Daly City-bound train smashed into it.
One passenger suffered an injury but it was not known whether he went to a hospital, Allison said. The train operator and truck driver also went by ambulance to a hospital.
