Residents in the central Maine town of Chelsea are reeling after Maine State Police say a child was hit by a tow truck Wednesday afternoon. “A terrible thing,” said Scott Miller, who lives next door to the home on Windsor Road where the incident happened. Miller said he was working in his shed Wednesday about 2:30 p.m. when he heard screams. Police were called to the area of 191 Windsor Road, where officials say a 21-month-old girl was playing outside when she wandered onto the road and laid down.It’s unclear how long the child was lying there before a 62-year-old man driving a tow truck hit her. The driver told police he didn’t realize what he saw on the road was a child until it was too late.The state troopers and witnesses performed CPR until first responders arrived, but the child, who has not been identified as of Thursday evening, was pronounced dead at Maine General Hospital in Augusta.Officials said the driver stayed at the scene, where dark skid marks were visible on the road. “I know the guy that was driving the truck, too, and he’s a nice guy. He lives on this road,” Miller said. “He always adheres to the speed limit. He never goes crazy with speeding.”Police said they will not release the driver’s name unless he ends up being charged. Miller said the woman who lives at the home the child came from has two children of her own. He said the victim and her mother were visiting at the time. It is still unclear whether there was an adult outside with the girl when the crash happened. Miller said he feels bad for everyone involved, including the truck driver.”It’s a sad situation. He’s got to go by here every day,” Miller said. Police have not given any details about the victim. Investigators reconstructed the crash, and the death itself remains under investigation.
