This video is simply the parade of trucks, as they are leaving Alexandra Truck Show in Victoria earlier this month and it illustrates the difference between the psychology of trucking and the reality of trucking in Australia.
If we were to take this parade of trucks leaving the town of Alexandra after the truck show as an example, you would gain the impression that the only trucks on the roads in Australia are from North American brands, with the vast majority being conventionals and that this was what the trucking industry is all about.
For many people, if they think of trucks and trucking, this is exactly what they think of, a big truck with plenty of stainless steel and bling. A big bonnet, bull bar, and a vast array of lights all over the truck.
However, if you actually have a look at the trucking fleet around Australia, or simply stand beside one of our major highways for a similar period of time, and watch the parade of vehicles as they go by, you would gain a completely different impression of what constitutes the trucking industry in Australia.
There is a very wide divide in this country between how people perceive trucks and trucking and how it actually is, in reality, doing all of the work which keeps our economy running smoothly.
This parade also illustrates a divide within our trucking community. On one side there is our dream of trucking and what many truck drivers like to perceive as their job and how it should be done, and what the trucks they drive should be like and how they feel about them. On the other side is what actually happens in the real world in most fleets.
There is a divide between the aspirations of many truck operators and drivers. Aspirations about what they would like to drive and how they would like to appear on the road, as opposed to what is actually a practical and profitable way to run a trucking operation and get the job done in the most effective way.
