He said the pay increases come as the company is “super duper busy”, after Nussbaum, like most of the rest of the industry faced a three and a half year decline in rates and freight volume.

Anderson said the company has made a series of pay adjustments implemented to improve recruitment and retention. These measures include reintroducing a 5-cent pay premium for specific key locations, which had been previously discontinued. Those locations include Carbon Cliff, Illinois; Chicago; Kenosha, Wisconsin; Indianapolis; and Columbus, Ohio.
He said the company also implemented a 2-cent across-the-board starting pay increase for over-the-road drivers and a subsequent flat 3-cent companywide increase, which cumulatively offered some drivers up to 10 cents more per mile.
Anderson also said the company also implemented a 3-cent per mile pay increase for the open deck flatbed fleet.
Drivers’ weekly minimum pay was also increased.

But Nussbaum has improved driver compensation aside from increasing per-mile pay, according to Anderson. Those measures include:
-
New drivers now receive a $3,000 bonus to help with the transition, paid in full within the first six months
-
Drivers also are included in a new profit sharing plan and benefit from their inclusion in the employee stock ownership program
Drivers also get paid if they decide to leave the company, according to Joseph. Nussbaum’s Early Exit Option — which gives new hires $2,000 in transition help if they decide within their first 90 days that Nussbaum isn’t the right fit — has doubled from $1,000 to $2,000. It’s part of the company’s “No Surprises” recruiting philosophy.
“Our professional drivers set Nussbaum apart by living our vision and values in a job that can be quite challenging,” said Bill Wettstein, president of Nussbaum Transportation, in a statement from the company. “They deserve this pay increase, and we are excited for them to continue sharing in the value that their hard work and dedication have created. We are also excited to extend these high-paying, purpose-driven career opportunities to other drivers who join our family.”
Nussbaum has 341 over-the-road van drivers, 165 dedicated drivers, 26 open deck drivers, and 12 regional drivers, totaling 544 drivers. Anderson said the goal is to have 570 drivers, keeping all of the company’s trucks seated and earning.
