Freightliner is expanding its Detroit Assurance safety suite. The system now has new capabilities designed to address some of the most dangerous situations facing commercial trucks: intersections and turning maneuvers.
The latest updates to Detroit Assurance with Active Brake Assist 6 (ABA6) introduce Cross Traffic Assist and an upgraded Active Side Guard Assist 2 with left-turn protection.
The features will be available on Freightliner Cascadia models beginning with 2027 production.
Focus on High-Risk Driving Scenarios
Intersections remain one of the most complex operating environments for heavy-duty trucks. Visibility constraints and unpredictable traffic patterns increase the risk of collisions.
Freightliner’s latest safety enhancements zero in on these challenges.
“Each enhancement to the Detroit Assurance Suite of Safety Systems reflects careful decisions about where added capability can make a meaningful difference for fleets and drivers,” said Joanna Buttler, general manager of product strategy and market development at Daimler Truck North America.
Cross Traffic Assist Targets Intersection Hazards
The new Cross Traffic Assist system is designed to detect vehicles crossing the truck’s path at intersections — situations where drivers often have limited reaction time.
Using radar sensors, the system monitors cross traffic and provides visual and audible warnings when a potential collision is identified.
If necessary and within system limits, it can also initiate partial or full braking to help mitigate impact severity.
Freightliner is also extending its side guard technology beyond right-side scenarios.
Active Side Guard Assist 2 with left-turn protection is engineered to monitor for oncoming traffic when a driver initiates a left turn.
If the system detects a collision risk, it can alert the driver and, in some cases, apply braking before the truck enters the hazard zone.
ABA6 Builds on Integrated Safety Platform
Detroit Assurance with ABA6 is already standard on fifth-generation Cascadia models and represents Freightliner’s most advanced safety platform to date.
The system combines four short-range radars, one long-range radar, and a camera to deliver a 270-degree monitoring field around the truck and trailer. It is designed to detect a wide range of hazards, including vehicles in adjacent lanes, stopped vehicles, and vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.
Driver Assistance Still Central
Freightliner emphasizes that these technologies are designed to assist — not replace –professional drivers.
Systems like Active Lane Assist 2 (ALA2), which helps keep trucks centered in their lane and can bring the vehicle to a controlled stop if the driver becomes unresponsive, complement the new features as part of a broader safety ecosystem.
Orders for the updated Detroit Assurance suite, including the new ABA6 features, are expected to open in the third quarter of 2026, with production slated to begin in January 2027.
