COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Five days after the arrest of Illinois surgeon Dr. Michael McKee, accused in the shooting deaths of his ex-wife Monique Tepe and her husband Spencer Tepe, Columbus police remain tight-lipped about the investigation.
“This is still an active and ongoing investigation,” Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant said, who called the homicides a targeted act of domestic violence.
McKee is now charged with two counts of premeditated aggravated murder for the December 30th shooting deaths of the couple, killed just feet from where their two young children were sleeping in the family’s home. The children were unharmed.
Police confirmed a car captured on surveillance cameras near the Tepe’s Weinland Park home, shortly before the murders belonged to McKee. Investigators were able to track that car to Rockford, Illinois, where McKee worked as a vascular surgeon.
“We can’t speak to all the specific details related to the case; we don’t want to jeopardize the ultimate goal of conviction,” Bryant said.
Police confirmed McKee is the person-of-interest captured on the security camera and released to the public, seen walking near the Tepe’s home around the time of the murders.
McKee was arrested Saturday at a fast-food restaurant, not far from where he worked in Rockford, Illinois.
Police have not released details about a motive, how McKee entered the Tepe home, or the types of weapons found in McKee’s Chicago high-rise condo, one of which police say has been linked to the December 30th shootings inside the Tepe home.
“At this time we are unable to talk specific information, when we do get more information, we will be happy to share it,” Bryant stated.
Columbus police confirm they are now working on plans to extradite McKee to Ohio.
McKee did not contest his extradition during a court appearance in Rockford, Illinois, on Monday, signing an order agreeing to be returned to Columbus to face charges.
“The determination of whether it will be detectives from Columbus or an outside entity,” Columbus Assistant Chief Gregory Bodker said, “likely an outside entity, the logistics being worked.”
Authorities have 10 days to return McKee to Columbus, with a hearing scheduled for next Friday in Rockford to update the court on his extradition status.
