There is a series of major changes which are coming in the next 20 or 30 years, but will the new technology transform the trucking industry?
This may sound like a dumb question, but by asking this question, I’m ignoring the obvious answer, which is yes, of course. The world is moving towards a zero carbon emissions economy and the trucking industry is going to have to make vast changes and introduce a raft of new technologies across the board in order to meet the requirements of the new regime.
However, this is not the thrust of my question. There is going to be a vast amount of new technology coming into the trucking industry and at the same time, our industry is having a crisis of recruitment.
We cannot find enough drivers technicians, schedulers, forklift drivers, you name it, we can’t get enough of it. The question I’m really asking is, will the introduction of all the new technology, which we have to have, will that introduction mean that a different type of person will be attracted to our industry?
We will be running cutting edge technology at high specifications and also doing our bit in the fight against climate change. The industry should no longer be seen as a dirty, gas guzzling old fashioned industry, but a modern clean and highly computerised industry. Our world is changing and it is changing fast. The trucking industry will have to adapt, at the same time as having an aging population within the workforce.
There is a dire need for many, many young people to come into the industry, turn it around and bring it forward into the into the 21st century. Perhaps emphasising the new technology which we will be using and the way that our systems are integrated throughout the supply chain may well be one of the catalysts to bring in enough people to enable the trucking industry to remain viable.
We are performing its vital task for their entire Australian economy and perhaps stressing the importance of the trucking industry, to the economy and to the fact that it will be using cutting edge technology in some of the toughest conditions on earth may well be the way to convince the youth of our nation that there is a future in the trucking industry for them.
We need to be willing to try anything as the shortages of skilled people moves towards a crisis point.
