For anybody traveling to Brisbane for the truck show next week, I expect there’s going to be plenty of surprises for them when they arrive in the main hall of the show.
I had a similar experience last year when I entered the halls of the IAA Transportation event which takes place every two years in Hanover. Expecting a typical truck show with the usual suspects around and everybody with some kind of new idea.
However, as it turned out, I was both surprised and shocked by how big the quantum shift was away from traditional diesel trucks and towards alternative power vehicles.
Not only did all the truck manufacturers have hydrogen, electric etc trucks on their stands. There were also a large number of new truck manufacturer stands which were purely electric or hydrogen powered vehicles.
Even the smaller ancillary stands, which fill in the gaps between the larger truck manufacturer stands, were all about alternative power. There were electric chargers hydrogen tanks, hydrogen bowsers plus an array battery technology makers.
I don’t think we can expect quite such a dramatic shift at the Brisbane Truck Show. This is because Australia is nothing like as far down the road towards zero carbon trucking as they are in Europe. At the same time, I suspect we will be surprised by just how many low emission technology, equipment and components there are on display at the Brisbane Truck Show
If they haven’t thought about it before, I suspect that people attending the show will realise that alt-power genuinely is a reality, now and into the future, for the trucking industry. It’s a good opportunity for us all to get started in our thinking about how we are going to transform the trucking industry from the current diesel based technology to something else.
Exactly what that will look like, it’s anybody’s guess, but there is going to be a transformation to something else, whether we like it or not. We need to be ready for it. Events like the Brisbane Show can serve as a catalyst to get people talking and thinking about the possibilities and what will be happening in the future and enable them to plan ahead and to move with the times
