A commercial truck driver who was at the centre of a dangerous pass on Hwy 5 near Clearwater in late March is no longer living in Canada.
The BC Highway Patrol provided an update on the investigation into the incident, footage of which was shared to social media by John Keating in the spring.
The video shows the man attempting an illegal pass over a double yellow line as he approaches a bend on Hwy 5, then scrambling to get back into his lane before hitting oncoming traffic.
“Thats me in the loaded truck and a Borrow lowbed truck with a loader on behind me,” explained Keating. “We actually blocked the highway in Barriere and boxed him him to get the plate and his face, (then) called 911.”
The BC Highway Patrol says it took the incident “very seriously” and opened an investigation, during which it received the full cooperation of the driver’s company, Manitoulin Transport.
“BCHP learned that the driver responsible for this event was immediately discharged from the company upon them hearing of the incident,” explained a BCHP release.
Investigators also learned that the driver lived in Edmonton, so the BCHP called upon the Edmonton Police Service to serve the man a BC violation ticket.
“While attempting to serve the violation ticket, EPS learned that the driver had left the country returning home as he was no longer working,” the BCHP noted.
Charges under BC’s Motor Vehicle Act have a one-year statute of limitations, which means the driver could still face charges or a fine if he returns to BC within that time frame.
The BCHP thanked the company for its cooperation and “rapid condemnation” of the driver and encouraged members of the public to report any dangerous driving, whether it be a commercial or passenger vehicle, to local police.
