MURRAY, Utah (KUTV) — A recently released 911 call details a 12-year-old girl’s journey along Interstate 15 in her mother’s stolen car.
The incident happened on Thursday, Mar. 7, when troopers received a report of a reckless driver on southbound I-15 at 2300 North.
“I believe I’ve got a drunk driver in front of my semi-truck. We’re currently going about 50 miles an hour and they are just swerving back and forth, their headlights are not on,” a semi-truck driver hauling a Walmart trailer said.
A trooper attempted to stop the vehicle at 3500 South, but it failed to comply, initiating a pursuit that reached speeds of up to 70 mph.
During the pursuit, the caller provided updates to the dispatcher, “They just sped up to over 65 please don’t crash, oh please don’t drive off the bridge.”
The caller also reported, “We’re down to 40 miles per hour, I’m staying behind them with my hazards on,” and “We’re down to 35 miles an hour on the freeway.”
The dispatcher informed the caller that a trooper had a visual on them, to which the caller observed, “Looks like he’s about to grab ’em he’s right behind the vehicle.”
Before ending the call, the caller was heard saying, “Thank you for everything you guys do.”
Additional troopers helped in slowing traffic and deploying road spikes near 9400 South. A pursuit intervention technique (PIT) maneuver brought the vehicle to a stop at 10400 South, troopers said.
Following the incident, the girl was taken into custody, with charges pending through the juvenile court system.
