NAVI MUMBAI: A 60-year-old truck driver wanted in a murder case for the past 29 years has been arrested by Panvel City police. The accused was traced to Amritsar, Punjab.
In 1994, a truck driver Kashmirsingh Virk (38), a resident of CBD-Belapur, was allegedly killed by his co-worker Salvindersingh Majbi and his two aides Bittusingh Majbi and Bausingh Gaudus. The trio had assaulted him with an iron bar. The motive for the attack was revenge as Salvindersingh suspected that he had been sacked from the driver’s job because Virk had complained against him. 29 years ago, Salvindersingh had been arrested by Panvel city police, however, his aides were absconding.
Nitin Thakre, senior inspector of Panvel said, “We neither had photographs nor the mobile numbers of the two wanted accused Bittusingh and Bausingh. We used technical expertise and a network of informers to trace their whereabouts.
We learned that they resided in Amritsar. Our police team went to Amritsar andwith the help of Amritsar police superintendent Jugraj Singh and retired police officer Sajjan Singh Cheema, we searched for Bittusingh for 10 days and succeeded in arresting him. To evade arrest, he had changed his name to Balwindersingh Darshansingh. The other accused Bausingh died 3-4 years ago. Hence, we obtained his death certificate. The accused Salvindersingh who was arrested 29 years ago also died after being released from jail. He was acquitted by the court that remarked that the investigation done by the police back then was shoddy.”
ACP (Panvel division) Ashok Rajput said, “Bittusingh claims that he repents the part he played in the crime and now that he has been arrested, he will be able to sleep peacefully.” Inspector Thakre said, “Though two of the accused have died, the murder case will not be closed as we have arrested Bittusingh against whom a charge-sheet will be filed in Panvel JMFC court. We will produce sufficient evidence to prove his involvement in the murder of Kashmirsingh Virk.”
