Two days after two Delhi Police inspectors died in an accident where their car collided with a truck in Haryana’s Sonipat, the driver of the truck was arrested on Thursday.
According to Sub-Inspector Katar Singh, the police officer in charge, the accused Wahid (28) was arrested on Thursday from Kundli. A resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur, Wahid had fled to his village after the incident, the police said, adding that the truck belonged to his brother. The police arrested him after tracing his whereabouts to Kundli as he had returned to Sonipat.
Wahid was given bail after his arrest, the police said.
Police Inspectors Dinesh Beniwal and Ranbir Singh Chahal, both in their late 30s, were on official duty when the accident took place around 11.30 pm on Monday. The impact of the collision crushed their car, killing the men on the spot, the police said. Singh said that the truck was at an entry point on the road when the car collided and went under it.
The Delhi Police also registered an FIR under charges of causing death by negligence and rash driving against the truck driver. The inspectors were posted in the Northwest district. While Beniwal was the special staff in charge, Chahal was an Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) inspector at Adarsh Nagar police station.
Police sources said the duo had left at night after receiving a lead in an important case they were working on. Beniwal was at the wheel, the police said.
