When I was a young teacher working in a school, I used to dream of driving beautiful trucks around the world….
One of the many problems holding me back was that I didn’t see truck driving as a profession with great prospects or social respect….
But then I met a very successful man who told me ‘The most important thing in life is to do what makes you happy. Don’t pay attention how prestigious the profession is. If you love cleaning, be a cleaner! Grow in your profession, learn all the time and clean like nobody else cleans! If you love to drive, be a driver the world never seen been before, and you never know where the road will take you! Just learn something new every day. Do the best you can!’
Years ago I really did not associate this profession with self development. Today I know I was wrong. You don’t have to be a trucker for life. You can travel the world, observe how different nations live and work…
Long hours behind the wheel can be used to train yourself by listening to podcasts and interviews with smart people. Weekends to build a plan and budget for your own business…. And money earned on the road… to start something of your own.
That’s what I did 🙂
It wasn’t easy at all and, paradoxically, probably the hardest thing wasn’t raising the money for my first truck, but going through the mental change – from the girl who nobody wanted to hire, through the employed trucker who takes ‘orders’, to the business owner who sets the direction himself and recruits people who will not only follow him, but will be the new, additional engines of the company.
The change is still ongoing and I have no idea where it will take me, but one thing is for sure – these 11 years spent on the road have been a beautiful time. And although the sun hasn’t always ‘shone’, I think it was best way to spent it for me. And the 12th year is already flying by… 🙂
