Numerous states have declared emergencies ahead of a major winter storm expected to impact more than 200 million people from the Southwest to the Northeast.
The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings, winter weather advisories, winter storm watches and ice storm warnings for parts of the Southeast, Gulf Coast and Midwest.

Widespread travel disruptions and extended power outages are possible with heavy snowfall, ice accumulations and extreme cold forecasted.
Delta began canceling flights at airports in North Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee on Thursday, Jan. 22.
As of Friday, Jan. 23, emergency declarations and/or waivers were enacted by 12 states due to Winter Storm Fern.
Those emergencies were in support of safety, transportation, utility restoration and supply chain continuity.
Additionally, many states were urging drivers to stay off the roads whenever possible.
“Our crews and equipment are ready, and we’ll be working around the clock to keep roads as clear as possible,” said Missouri DOT Director Ed Hassinger. “We need the public’s help. Conditions will be challenging and your cooperation is critical to keeping everyone safe.”

Two FMCSA regional emergencies extended on Jan. 15 to address the heating fuel supply chain remain in effect through Feb. 15.
Those declarations provide relief from the maximum driving time for fuel haulers assisting emergency efforts in 21 states.
