A flatbed truck that police said disregarded railroad crossing signals was T-boned by a train the driver didn’t see coming.
The crash occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Friday as the truck was attempting to cross a double set of train tracks north of Voss Taylor, a steel fabricator located at 7925 Beech Daly Road.
Police said the truck driver appeared to have been at fault, ignoring the warning signals that a train was approaching.
Beech Daly Road, between Champaign Street and Ecorse Road, was closed to traffic for several hours immediately following the crash.
According to Traffic Investigator Anthony Borg, a flatbed truck hauling construction materials was traveling north on Beech Daly when the driver came upon the railroad tracks. He said traffic signals were activated and the train crossing bar was down.
Not seeing a moving train in the immediate vicinity, several cars reportedly went around the lowered crossing bar. Borg said the driver did the same thing.
“He did not see a westbound train and got T-boned,” Borg said. “The driver and passenger were transported to Beaumont Dearborn (Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital) with minor injuries.”
At around noon several trucks from a Monroe-based company that responds to spills made their way to the scene to clean up leaking fluids that resulted due to the crash.
Borg said that the train that struck the truck was in the driver’s blind spot, but police still deemed him to be at fault for disregarding the activated train-crossing signal and lowered bar.
