A truck driver’s wish to earn a better life abroad was cut short when he met his end in a road accident in the Ba highlands on Saturday.
Dead is Atishwar Nand, 43, who was buried among pine logs after the truck he was driving tumbled on a steep slope near Narogi settlement in Koroboya on Saturday afternoon.
Police officers spent at least 20 hours at the accident scene trying to retrieve his body and finally did at 10am yesterday with the assistance of a few individuals and an excavator.
Close family members and loved ones also rushed to the scene after being informed of the tragedy.
Koroboya resident Isake Amoka said villagers were alerted of a loud crash a little after 2pm on Saturday and upon discovery, alerted Tavua police.
He said a few villagers rushed to the nearby road where there was phone reception to alert the police of the incident.
The youngest of five siblings, Mr Nand was known to many as a loving father who cared for the needs of others.
Grieving brother Hirdesh Nand said his brother was very supportive and treated his elder siblings and extended family with love.
“He has been a driver all his life, and it was something he loved,” Mr Nand said.
“He was also working on his papers to apply for a work permit to Australia and this will no longer happen and this makes me sad because he had just requested for help with his application.
“He was a very helpful brother and very supportive and this is something I am going to miss about him.”
Family members are also awaiting the outcome of the post-mortem examination before finalising funeral rites.
Police media officer Wame Bautolu stated that the driver was trapped underneath the logs, was unresponsive, and attempts to get him out were unsuccessful due to its rugged location.
