Truck parking projects in five states have received a funding boost from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
On Tuesday, July 7, the U.S. DOT announced the awarding of $1.73 billion in BUILD Grant funding for 127 different infrastructure projects across 52 states, territories and the District of Columbia.
While the bulk of those funds – roughly $1.3 billion – will go to road and bridge projects, $62 million will be used for truck parking projects in Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and Wyoming. In total, 127 different projects received funding.
“America is fortunate to have a Builder in the White House who knows America is only as great as our infrastructure. That’s why this Department is investing in repairing critical roads and bridges that connect Americans to job opportunities, port infrastructure that bolsters our national security, and aviation and transit projects that move American families,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a statement. “The impact of these dollars will be felt in communities nationwide for years to come.”
The truck parking projects receiving DOT grant funding include:
- Illinois receives $13 million for parking expansion and rest area improvements to the Fort Massac and Salt Kettle rest areas. The projects will create roughly 85 new parking spaces at the two sites.
- Kentucky receives $25 million to increase parking capacity at seven existing rest areas along I-75, I-71, I-65 and I-64.
- Louisiana receives $640,000 for its I-10/I-12 Corridor Truck Parking Study.
- Mississippi receives $22 million to increase truck parking capacity from 20 to an estimated 74 spaces at the Hancock County Welcome Center on I-10.
- Wyoming receives $1.4 million to complete a winter truck parking action plan that would prioritize potential truck parking solutions along Wyoming’s interstate system.
The funding for the truck parking projects is in addition to the $200 million recently earmarked by Congress for truck parking projects under the DOT’s INFRA grant programs. Applications for those grants are due by July 15, with funding awards announced at a later date.
