Congress spends much of its time debating regulations and funding, but a bipartisan resolution focuses on something simpler: reminding Americans how to drive around trucks safely.
Last week, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration held its annual campaign to raise awareness on sharing the road with trucks called “Our Roads, Our Safety.” Although FMCSA regulates truck drivers, the campaign targets all motorists, providing them tools, tips and resources to help prevent crashes with large trucks and buses.
While this year’s “Our Roads, Our Safety” ended on June 5, efforts to educate motorists and honor truck drivers are everlasting, and a group of lawmakers wants to keep the message going.
On Monday, June 8, Reps. Dave Taylor, R-Ohio, and Shomari Figures, D-Ala., introduced a resolution supporting designating May 31 through June 6, 2026, as “Our Roads, Our Safety Week.” They were joined by a bipartisan group of Congressional Trucking Caucus members.
The resolution recognizes “the movement of goods and people is the backbone of the United States economy,” while noting that road safety is the shared responsibility of all road users, including passenger vehicle drivers, truckers, bus drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians. It points out that public awareness like “Our Roads, Our Safety Week” is “essential to reducing traffic fatalities.”
“American families are the most precious cargo on our roads, and keeping them safe should be a top priority,” Rep. Taylor said in a statement. “With our trucking industry moving billions of tons of freight every year, road safety is a shared responsibility between passenger vehicle drivers, truck drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. I am proud to stand with my fellow members of the Congressional Trucking Caucus to promote best practices on the road so families and truckers alike reach their destinations safely.”
Essentially, the resolution throws support behind the “Our Roads, Our Safety,” and encourages FMCSA to continue outreach and education.
The resolution was met with widespread support from industry stakeholders, including the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.
“Truckers make the highways their office every day, and no one cares more about road safety than them,” OOIDA President Todd Spence said. “That’s why OOIDA supports FMCSA’s ‘Our Roads, Our Safety’ campaign, an effort to educate all motorists about how to safely share the road with trucks. Thank you to Representatives Taylor and Figures for recognizing this important program today and for prioritizing road safety for everyone.”
FMCSA’s safety-awareness campaign traces its roots to 2016, when the agency launched an initiative called “Our Roads, Our Responsibility.” The program later became known as “Our Roads, Our Safety” and has received support from trucking industry stakeholders for nearly a decade. LL
