Tulsa-based Melton Truck Lines said May 29 it is increasing mileage pay for all company drivers by 5 cents to 8 cents per mile.
The carrier described the move as the largest driver pay increase in company history. In a statement, Melton said the raise represents a $10 million investment aimed at attracting and retaining drivers.
This new pay scale starts entry-level drivers at 60 cents per mile and rising to 70 cents per mile for the most experienced drivers.
“Our drivers have continued to demonstrate an unmatched level of commitment and hard work, even during one of the toughest freight markets in recent years,” said Bob Peterson, Melton chairman and CEO. “We’re incredibly proud of the professionalism and dedication they bring to the road every day. Flatbed trucking is not an easy job, and the success of our company is built on the resilience and work ethic of our drivers. Melton drivers are the best in the industry, and they deserve every bit of this increase.”
Melton also said drivers have multiple ways to earn extra pay, including $100 tarp pay, fuel bonuses, career-path programs and other incentives.
The 72-year-old company operates some 1,300 trucks and has more than 2,000 employees.
