The Vermont Senate is getting serious about truckers getting stuck on a notorious stretch of highway that prohibits tractor-trailer traffic.
That state’s senate recently passed a bill that raises the fine from $2,000 to $20,000 for trucks getting stuck and needing to be towed from Smuggler’s Notch on Vermont Route 108. The scenic mountain route runs between Cambridge and Stowe.
For the bill to become law, it will have to be approved by the state House and be signed by Gov. Phill Scott.
Numerous signs warn against commercial traffic, but many drivers who become stuck in the narrow Notch blame their GPS program for misdirecting them. to the route, which has several hairpin turns.
