Difficult but necessary was how Standard Forwarding Freight described the decision to suspend its operations.
The announcement comes after the Illinois-based trucking company completed a strategic business review.
In a news release, Standard Forwarding said it will “temporarily suspend its day-to-day operations and reduce its workforce.” Meanwhile, others have suggested that the closure is permanent.
The announcement did not include an exact number of jobs or employees that could be affected by this decision. However, FMCSA’s SAFER website reports that Straight Forwarding operated 302 trucks and employed 277 drivers.
“The decision was made after careful consideration of the company’s current circumstances and the need to conduct an orderly evaluation of the business,” the company said.
Standard Forwarding said it will undertake an operational assessment to determine appropriate next steps.
According to its website, Standard Forwarding began operations in 1934. The company operated as a next-day or two-day regional trucking company with 14 terminals across five Midwest states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Temporary or permanent?
According to a Monday, Dec. 29 memo from Teamsters National Freight Division Director John A. Murphy, Standard Forwarding intends to “entirely shut down its operations.”
Standard Forwarding had not previously communicated any challenges or difficulties or attempted to work to avoid this outcome, according to the Teamsters memo.
“The Freight Division has requested immediate bargaining with Standard Forwarding to obtain additional information and secure whatever benefits possible,” the memo said. “We are exploring all legal options, including possible litigation, to enforce any federal, state and local protections available to our members.”
Recent expansion
In August 2025, Standard Forwarding announced the expansion of its LTL service lanes in new markets, including Arizona, California, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio, South Dakota and Utah.
The company said that expansion would provide greater reach and more flexibility while maintaining the same reliability.
