A baby moose was saved from her ‘sure demise’ in Alaska after it fell into a lake and became wedged beneath a dock, police report.
Spencer Warren, an employee at Destination Alaska Adventure Co., heard a noise he initially mistook for a bird when he arrived at work at Beluga Lake in Homer around 6:30 a.m. on Friday.
As he headed to the dock to prepare a floatplane for the day’s trip, Spencer realised the noise wasn’t from a bird at all, but from a moose calf trapped between the floats of the plane and the dock.

“Oh, man, where is mama? I know she’s nearby.”Spencer’s initial thought to himself until he discovered she was just four feet away.
As any mother would do, she also kept Spencer away from her baby calf, who kept struggling to get out of the lake but its hooves couldn’t gain traction on the metal floats, which replace the wheels on a plane to enable it to take off and land on water.
“It’s like an ice rink for the moose and its hooves,” Spencer said, “So he just kept slipping and slipping and could not get up.”
Spencer contacted his boss who then called the Homer Police Department, and the officers arrived on the dock.
During the rescue, one used his police cruiser to block the mother moose while the other officers including Spencer attempted to pull the calf moose from the water, says Lt. Ryan Browning, Homer Police dept.

Despite one of the calf’s legs being stuck across the top of the plane’s float, rescuers managed to pull the moose safely from the water.
“Thankfully, he wasn’t moving much, which made the rescue a bit easier,” Spencer said, “We just lifted him straight out and placed him on the dock.”
An officer assisted the calf in standing up on the boardwalk and watched as it reunited with its mother.
“Anytime you can rescue a little critter, it always makes you feel good,” Browning remarked.
