FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Investigators say a driver was intoxicated and speeding when his truck crashed into a moped late Tuesday night in Fort Wayne.
Conner Mullins, 20, faces preliminary charges of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and driving while intoxicated.
According to police, the crash happened around 11:15 p.m. near the intersection of Coliseum Boulevard and Lake Avenue. Both the truck and moped were traveling south when the truck rear-ended the moped.
According to Allen Superior Court documents, Mullins took a breath test which showed he was twice the legal limit at .160 blood-alcohol content. He allegedly admitted to officers he had been drinking that night.
Medics took the man riding the moped to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Those inside the pickup truck were not hurt.
Police wrote in court documents the crash happened “with such a force that the moped suffered catastrophic damage, and front end damage to the Ram [truck] so severe it extended into the engine department.”
According to records from the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, Mullins was charged with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, operating while intoxicated, operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, and operating while intoxicated causing endangerment.
The crash remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department Fatal Crash Team and the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office.
