FARGO — Arne Berg may be celebrating his 90th birthday, but the local trucking business owner is still showing up for work every day.
“I don’t do very much on this computer, but I used to do a bit more,” Berg said, working at his computer.
It’s early in the morning, and Arne Berg is already at his desk at Berg Grain and Produce.
“Mike does all the computer work so I don’t have to, ” Berg said.
This farm boy from Finley, North Dakota, originally tried farming.
“Eighty-four-foot long (barn), we had 24 milk cows in there, and we used to bring the hay in, with a sling,” Berg said.
But after a couple of rough growing seasons in the early 1950s, he decided to start a trucking business on his own.
“Here’s the first semi I (had) really done much trucking with. It’s a ’56 Ford,” Berg said.

Things just snowballed as he went from hauling gravel to hauling crops all over the country. His fleet of trucks continued to grow.
“We had a hundred trucks here in Fargo and, of course … this room was full of dispatchers at the time,” Berg said.
At one point he had 140 workers.
He has his own parking spot and a set of stairs he still climbs every day when he comes to work. And he’s dedicated. He clocks out late every day.
“I’m usually here until, probably, 7, 8 o’clock at night, and then we go and have something to eat. I don’t get up that early in the morning,” Berg said.
Over the weekend, he celebrated his 90th birthday. There was dancing and a live band. But even at 90, he was back at work this week.
“I am sure the wife doesn’t mind me leaving and going to work,” he said.
He’s been on the job for nearly 70 years.
“I do what I love and love what I do, so why quit? And besides that, I get out of the house and I don’t have to watch ‘Days of Our Lives,’ or ‘Judge Judy,’ or any of those,” Berg said.
