A small trucking company owner has called the new truck emissions standards a “crazy” mandate that’s too soon.
Matt Pierson owns Eagle Enterprises in Nebraska and is a part of the Nebraska Truckers’ Association. He says that the proposal brought forth by the Biden Administration and EPA that mandates more electric semi trucks by 2027 is too soon for his company and other small trucking companies like his.
“I don’t foresee it happening in the next ten years, let alone twenty probably,” Pierson said to 3 News Now. “To mandate that 25% have to be electric in the next 10 years, that’s crazy.”
Pierson says that adding even one electric truck to his fleet would be challenging, not only because of price, but because of logistics and infrastructure concerns.
“There’s not one trucking charging station in the state of Nebraska,” Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers said in a recent statement regarding his two actions against the rulings.
And not only are there no places to charge the trucks, but “you’re going to have an [electric] truck sitting there charging,” Pierson said. “I don’t know how long it’s going to take, certainly longer than fueling.”
“It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon,” Pierson concluded.
