NEWPORT, Ark. (KAIT) – If you are interested in learning how to drive an 18-wheeler, you’ll soon have a chance.
ASU Newport is expanding its Commercial Driver Training program to it Jonesboro and Marked Tree campuses.
The new facilities will have two trucks at each location to accommodate at least five students.
Dean for Applied Science Micheal Nowlin said about 200 students complete the program in Newport every year, adding that number should increase when the new programs open.
“We know a lot of our students have transportation issues that may prevent them from coming all the way to Newport for training,” Nowlin said.
The CDT program is four weeks of hands-on experience behind the wheel. After completion, students who receive their Commercial Drivers License (CDL) may enter the truck driving job market.
MC Express is a shipping company owned and operated out of Jonesboro. Charles Mitchell, who works in the Outbound Operations Department, said they are always looking to hire truck drivers.
“We need truck drivers yesterday, tomorrow, tonight, today,” Mitchell said. “Truck drivers are the bloodline of America.”
Nowlin said applications for Marked Tree are now open for anyone who wants to drive big trucks professionally. He said the Jonesboro application is still in the works, but expects it to open come June. He said both programs will start once five students enroll.
