COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KOAA) – A Colorado woman is close to making history.
Lexie Bader is attempting to become one of the first female double amputees ever to receive her commercial driver’s license.
“I’m a double amputee and most jobs for me are just very difficult,” Baber said.
According to Baber, she doesn’t let her physical challenge stop her.
“I do competitive snowboarding. I love camping and kayaking, traveling,” she said.
And the Colorado native spends most of her time behind the wheel.
“I’m an Uber driver. I have been doing it for about five and a half years. So, I started thinking about some other jobs,” she said.
Her boyfriend Zach Heyne suggested truck driving.
“When I was 17, I actually got my class A license. So, I kind of knew before bringing it up what it kind of entailed,” he said.
Bader took online classes, passed five written tests, and received her permit.
“I have to get 30 hours with the school driving a semi around Colorado Springs,” Bader said.
After those hours, the 27-year-old said she will have a class A commercial license from the United States Truck Driving School.
“I can have a job where I can actually make money for myself for the first time in my life,” Bader said.
Bader said she doesn’t expect to have many female truck-driving students with her, but she is looking forward to her training.
“They’ve never trained a double amputee. So, I’m like, let’s be the first,” Bader said.
She also said she hopes to be an inspiration.
Bader is scheduled to graduate with her trucking certificate at the end of May.
