The driver of a tow truck struck and killed a woman crossing an Alphabet City street on Monday, according to police.
The 67-year-old victim was crossing E. 10th St. at Avenue C when the 59-year-old driver made a left turn off of the avenue around 7:05 p.m., cops said.
The driver of the flat bed tow truck slammed into her as she was in the crosswalk. She died at the scene.
Later Monday night, the woman’s body remained near the intersection under a white sheet as police continued to investigate. Her name was not immediately released.
“Her groceries were all over the place by her body,” said a witness who did not want to be named. “She must’ve been on her way home from shopping. It’s sad.”
The tow truck driver stayed on the scene and it was not clear if he was able to see the woman crossing the street before he hit her, police sources said.
He did not immediately face charges.
