The accident happened on January 9, 2024, at around 5:21 PM. It took place between the 90.8 and 91.0 eastbound mile markers, according to a report by the Pennsylvania State Police in DuBois.
Yan Ma, 60, from Jersey City, NJ, was driving a 2010 Toyota Sienna in the left eastbound lane. Simultaneously, Osiri Tejada De La Cruz, 26, from Wilkes-Barre, PA, was operating a 2007 Freightliner Cascadia in the right eastbound lane.
Ma attempted to change lanes to the right and did not notice De La Cruz’s vehicle. This resulted in Ma’s vehicle sideswiping the driver side of De La Cruz’s vehicle. The impact caused Ma’s Toyota to spin 180 degrees and come to rest facing west between the two eastbound lanes. De La Cruz’s vehicle swerved off the left eastbound lane, crossed into the median, and finally collided head-on with a tree.
Ma, who was wearing his safety equipment, was not injured and was not transported to a medical facility. The Toyota, which sustained functional damage, was driven away from the scene. Ma was charged with a violation of ‘Turning Movements and Required Signals’ under statute 3334A.
De La Cruz, also wearing safety equipment, sustained a suspected minor injury, specifically a serious cut to his right arm. He was transported to Penn Highlands DuBois Hospital by Dusan EMS. His Freightliner, which sustained disabling damage, was towed from the scene by Bricen Towing.
Trooper Tyler Blaniar of the DuBois unit is overseeing the ongoing investigation.
