Neighbors are telling Action News Now that delivery truck drivers are constantly parking in red zones
REDDING, Calif. – A delivery drop dilemma – neighbors at an apartment complex west of Downtown Redding told Action News Now they’re struggling with safety in their neighborhood with delivery truck drivers.
One neighbor, Kevin Erickson, said delivery truck drivers constantly park in the red zone. He said he did what he could to stop it, but nothing seems to be working.
With the holiday season in full swing, you’re probably seeing more delivery trucks out on the road.
But neighbors like Erickson said they’ve been dealing with delivery trucks parking in a red zone outside his apartment complex on Magnolia Avenue for a while now.
“I’ve got ahold of Redding Police Department about this issue of [delivery trucks] parking in the red. People drive really fast down through here… When you have a box truck sitting here, and I try to come out of my apartment complex, it’s really hard to see,” Erickson said.
Erickson got in touch with the RABA bus authority to cut back tree branches to make the bus stop sign more visible and the City of Redding’s Streets Division to have the curb repainted red a couple of months ago, hoping to make it more noticeable. But trucks continue parking in the red zone.
“I’ve been really nice to all the drivers that have come here. I’ve tried to talk to them in a manner and explain to them that parking in the red, you cannot do that… There is no parking in the red and there’s plenty of other places to [park] and how dangerous it is,” Erickson said.
When Action News Now reporter Taylor Helmes was at the apartment complex, a Fed Ex truck pulled up and parked in the red zone, and Erickson decided to do something about it.
Erickson approached the truck driver and said, “Did you know that this is a red [zone]?”
The driver responded, saying yes and that he was good, though. Erickson told the driver he could get a $98 fine and a ticket, but the driver continued to deliver a package across the street.
Other neighbors said it’s frustrating and a huge safety concern, not only with the delivery trucks parking in the red zone and blocking visibility for those leaving the apartment complex but with drivers speeding down the residential road.
Action News Now has reached out to the Redding Police Department’s Code Enforcement Division but has not heard back yet.
Action News Now also contacted Fed Ex, which took a complaint report on the issue.
Amazon gave this statement to Action News Now:
“We’re thankful Action News Now brought this to our attention this afternoon, and while we haven’t had enough time to fully investigate, we are actively looking into this matter.”
According to the California DMV website, no one can park or stop in red zones except for emergency vehicles. At this specific location on Magnolia Avenue, the RABA bus authority has a posted bus stop.
