A 36-year-old Patterson man was killed after leaving his truck to assist the victim of another crash on Interstate 205 in Tracy, the California Highway Patrol said. The first crash involved a Toyota pickup truck that overturned Saturday around 3:45 a.m. eastbound on the freeway west of Grant Line Road, CHP said. The truck came to a rest on its side and blocked the No. 2 lane. A witness pulled to the right shoulder near the rear of the truck and called 911. Around this time, the 36-year-old Patterson man driving a Peterbilt truck and trailer pulled over to the right shoulder ahead of the other witness’ vehicle. He then walked to the overturned Toyota to check on the victim, according to CHP. According to CHP, the Peterbilt driver realized he couldn’t assist the Toyota driver and walked back to the right shoulder. At the same time, a 23-year-old woman from Modesto driving a Kia was traveling in the No. 3 lane and approached the crash scene. Her vehicle hit the man as he was walking back to his Peterbilt truck, CHP said. The Kia driver had been paying attention to the parked vehicles on the shoulder but hadn’t seen the man who was walking in the roadway or the overturned Toyota, CHP said. She suffered minor injuries. KCRA 3 has reached out to CHP to find out more about the status of the Toyota driver and if alcohol was suspected as a factor in any of the crashes.See more California headlines here.
