A log truck driver is out of jail on bond after being arrested for hitting two children as they got off their school bus near New Augusta then leaving the scene of the accident, according to a press release from the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Wesley Turner, 68, of State Line was charged with aggravated assault-injuring a child exiting a bus, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, reckless driving and expired tag after he was arrested at a nearby mill off Highway 29 in Perry County.
The children, whose identities and ages weren’t available, suffered what were described as “moderate” but non-life-threatening injuries.
That was “very fortunate,” said MHP spokesman Taylor Shows.
Turner reportedly told officials that he was trying to avoid colliding with the stopped school bus on Highway 29, swerving to the left lane in his 2000 Mack 600 tractor-trailer but striking two kids. Turner then continued on to the mill, where he was arrested on Tuesday evening. He was released from jail the following day on $28,000 bond.
Turner was charged under Nathan’s Law, a bill that was pushed by state Sen. Chris McDaniel (R-Ellisville) to increase the penalties for passing a stopped school bus after Jones County kindergartner Nathan Key was struck and killed in front of his Houston Road home in December 2009.
