A dump truck driver’s body has been recovered after plunging hundreds of feet into a pit at an Indiana rock quarry.
The accident happened on Tuesday, September 12th at the Mulzer Crushed Stone Inc. rock quarry in Cape Sandy, Indiana.
According to AP News, a Mulzer employee was driving the dump truck near the edge of the pit when it slipped and plunged over the edge. The truck landed in the water at the bottom of the pit and sank, taking the driver with it.
Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ law enforcement was able to take sonar images of the submerged truck, but were unable to find the driver on Tuesday, so the recovery efforts continued into Wednesday.
WTWO 2 News reports that the unstable and steep terrain of the quarry hindered rescue efforts, but Mulzer employees were able to assist first responders by constructing a temporary path down to the water.
As of 1:22 p.m. on Wednesday, divers recovered the body from the vehicle, which was approximately 30 feet below the water’s surface. The identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of their family.
