Business Exodus Strikes Again: Georgia’s Job Market to Suffer Staff Reductions
Disappointing news this week with logistics service provider Mathieson Flight Extenders announcing it will permanently close its facility in Atlanta, Georgia, resulting in 335 employees losing their positions.
Under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, an employer with more than 100 full-time workers must provide a 60-day notice before laying off 50 or more people at a single site. Earlier this week, Mathieson lodged a filing with the Georgia Department of Labor advising of layoffs.
It stated 335 employees working at the location at 1970 Maple Ave, Atlanta, Georgia, would be laid off commencing October 15. It is expected the layoffs will be permanent.
Mathieson contracts with the United States Postal Service to haul mail but has recently experienced financial difficulties. Twelve months ago, the company filed for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The Atlanta facility isn’t the only location due to close. A location in Maryland is also closing, resulting in 327 employees being terminated.
Mathieson is the latest transportation and logistics company to lay off staff. Two weeks ago, trucking giant Yellow Corp abruptly ceased operations and laid off 30,000 staff across the United States.
