According to police, the incident took place on the outskirts of Illanda village in Wardhannapet mandal of Warangal district. The truck, coming in the opposite direction from Khammam, rammed into their vehicle at very high speed.
While four people, including the auto driver, died on the spot, two passengers, Nithin and Rupchand, died at the MGM Hospital in Warangal. Bodies of the deceased were shifted to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Wardhannapet for post-mortem examination.
Truck driver was drunk, drowsy
The deceased have been identified as Battu Srinivasa (42), Jabothu Kureri (25), Nithin Mandal (12), Arjun Mandal (20), Suresh Kureri (30) and Rupchand Damin (35). While Srinivasa was an auto driver and a resident of Shivanagar in Warangal, others were honey sellers from Jaipur, Rajasthan living in a labour colony in Warangal. The injured person, 18-year-old Amir Damin, is also from Rajasthan.
The injured person, Amir, was shifted to a private hospital in Hanumakonda.
Speaking to reporters, Wardhannapet ACP V Suresh, who visited the spot soon after the accident, said the truck driver, Suresh, was driving under the influence of alcohol and was also drowsy, which led to the accident. “The passengers were going to fetch honey from the forest area of Thorrur mandal when the truck rammed into their vehicle,” he said.
A case has been registered under Section 304A of the IPC (causing death by rash or negligent act) and the truck driver has been taken into custody, police said.
Warangal police commissioner A V Ranganath also visited the accident spot.
According to Illanda villagers, about 55 major accidents have taken place at the same spot in the last three months, leading to several deaths.
