A driver suffered serious injuries Wednesday after their vehicle was involved in a violent crash on Route 28 in Bridgewater, according to first responders in the Massachusetts town.Bridgewater police officers and firefighters received multiple 911 calls at about 3 p.m. reporting a crash on Bedford Street, near the Bridgewater Ice Arena and the Old Colony Correctional Center.When they arrived at the crash scene, first responders found a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and a Volkswagen utility vehicle with heavy front-end damage. The two vehicles were also blocking Bedford Street.The driver of the Volkswagen suffered what appeared to be serious injuries in the crash, according to authorities. Firefighters had to extricate the driver from the vehicle before they could be flown to a regional trauma center by medical helicopter. Authorities did not provide an update on that driver’s condition.Video of the crash scene shot by Sky5 shows the Volkswagen had its roof peeled toward the passenger side by first responders. The vehicle’s trunk door had also come off in the crash and was on the roadway among the wreckage. A wheel from one of the vehicles could also be seen in the roadway.The driver of the Chevrolet truck suffered minor injuries that were treated at the scene by first responders. Investigators determined the Chevrolet truck was traveling south on Bedford Street when it crossed the center line and collided with the Volkswagen in the northbound lane.The crash continues to be investigated by the Bridgewater Police Department. Members of the Plymouth County Bureau of Criminal Investigation also responded to the scene to take photographs.Members of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) helped Bridgewater first responders close the stretch of Bedford Street where the crash happened, which is not far from the Middleborough town line.
