IONIA COUNTY, MI – A semi-truck driver was critically injured Wednesday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash on I-96 near Lowell.
As of 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, the Michigan Department of Transportation reports all lanes of westbound I-96 just after Nash Highway remain blocked. State police are asking drivers to seek an alternative route.
The crash happened around noon Wednesday when a semi-truck driver on westbound I-96 failed to slow for a traffic backup and struck the back of a passenger vehicle, according to Michigan State Police.
The passenger vehicle went into the median while the semi-truck continued on, striking another semi-truck, state police said. The impact caused the second semi-truck to strike a third semi-truck.
The driver of the first semi-truck was ejected from their vehicle during the crash and was flown to an area hospital with critical injuries, troopers said.

The crash remains under investigation.
