CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — According to an NBC News report, bodycam video has been released showing a Circleville police releasing a K-9 at a semi-truck driver during a traffic stop after another trooper could be heard telling the officer not to release the dog.
The incident originally happened on Tuesday, July 4 on U.S. Route 23 after Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers engaged in a “lengthy” pursuit of 23-year-old semi-truck driver Jadarrius Rose. Officers attempted to initiate the traffic stop after his vehicle was observed to be missing a left rear mud flap.
After failing to yield initial attempts to stop his vehicle, stop sticks were used twice before the vehicle stopped. According to NBC News’ report, an incident report from the traffic stop stated, “After several times of being ordered to exit the vehicle, the suspect exited the vehicle from the driver’s side door. The driver was given orders to get down on the ground and the suspect would not comply.”
In the video, the officer that had control of the K-9 can be heard telling Rose to get on the ground or he would “get bit”. Another trooper can be heard yelling not to release the dog as Rose was attempting to surrender with his hands up.
The K-9 can be seen biting and pulling at Rose’s arm while he screamed loudly to troopers to get the dog off of him.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol clarified to NBC News that the officers involved in the incident were not from the patrol, but from the Circleville Police Department.
3News’ Lydia Esparra spoke with a representative from the Akron NAACP, they released the following statement:
“I don’t know where we are going in America. Where we are going in Ohio. And shame on the Circleville police. Shame on them. You would not treat anyone else that way and it’s very disturbing.”
Bodycam footage from the incident can be seen below.
